　　1914年炎天，伦敦一所单身公寓。芭蕾舞女演员塞瑞拉·安布罗斯（克莱尔·布鲁姆 Claire Bloom饰）在自己的房间里，翻开煤气诡计自杀。万幸的是，喝得醉醺醺，刚回家的邻人卡尔费罗（查理·卓别林 Charles Chaplin饰）恰好救了她。等赛瑞拉苏醒今后，卡尔费罗才得知她是由于得了风湿不能再舞蹈，才发生轻生的动机。而卡尔费罗已经是一位巨大的笑剧演员。他悉心的顾问着赛瑞拉，并用自己的滑稽笑剧撤销了她自杀的想法。六个月后，赛瑞拉重新成功的站了起来，并在一出芭蕾剧中担任重要脚色。可赛瑞拉却与一位作曲家堕入了热恋，卡尔费罗只能冷静的祝愿他们，单独上演他的含泪笑剧。
　　本片的主题曲为卓别林亲身操刀建造，以其优美动听的旋律，荣获1973年第45届奥斯卡金像奖，最好原创配乐（剧情类）。
