　　音乐学家霍华德同未婚妻尤尼丝到了旧金山，此行的目标是为了获得拉雷比基金会颁布的2万美圆的奖学金。霍华德随身照顾的花格皮箱中装着收集来的火城岩石标本，那是用来证实音乐起源的重要证据。他们下榻在布里斯托尔旅店。同时下榻在这家旅店的三位客人恰巧也带着同霍华德如出一辙的皮箱，更巧的是，他们同霍华德住在同一层。接待员弗里兹对霍斯金斯太太皮箱中的珍贵珠宝起了不良用心，他同私人侦察哈里勾结在一路，预备侍机动手。史姑娘师长的皮箱中装着政府的奥秘文件，特务琼斯化尽血汗得要把这些文件搞得手。第三个是霍华德的追求者米迪，她追踪心爱的人来到此地，她的皮箱里装满了各类亵服。故事就围绕着这4个皮箱展开，怀着各类目标来到此地的各路人马为到达目标，各展其才，在旅店里不竭掀起风浪，上演了一出出闹剧。
