维斯康蒂压卷之作，也翻译作《无辜的人》，直至其归天后刚刚上映。影片仍然是他最为心仪的贵族衰败主题，由意大利著名影星吉安尼尼领衔，饰演一位好色公爵，经常在外招蜂引蝶；不意后来他得知妻子与人有染并生下一子时，大发雷霆，居然将孩子在北风中冻死。最为嘲讽的是，他并不愤怒妻子与人私通，而是由于她的情人并非贵族，而是麻烦作家！最初公爵因放不下体面而自杀。奢华的美工设想、复原贵族生活的奢华安排是维斯康提晚年创作中不成或缺的一环，诞生于贵族世家而又对贵族腐败陈旧的生活方式停止鄙弃批评，想完全革新而又没法切断世袭的文雅文化风格，是维斯康提平生所困扰的话题，也是他电影首要的创作偏向。
