本片按照真人真事改编。Bobby（瑞恩·凯利 Ryan Kelley 饰）是一个善良、虔敬的少年，有爱他的家人。但在他向家人率直自己的性偏向后一切改变了。母亲Mary（西格妮·韦弗 Sigourney Weaver 饰）以为同性恋会下天堂的训诫，想尽法子改正儿子。而Bobby的疾苦一日千里。在满20岁生日前Bobby熟悉了开畅青年David，可Mary拒绝接管，并以有一个同性恋儿子为耻。Bobby悲伤的分开家最初挑选灭亡来竣事心里的熬煎。他的死完全叫醒了家人，特别是Mary，她在无尽的懊悔中起头打仗同性情人群，加入PFLAG小组，与神职职员探讨圣经诠释。在翻阅儿子的日志后，她起头直面自己认同儿子。落空儿子的母亲在倾盆大雨中失声痛哭，雨水和泪水将刚强、偏见和不了解洗刷得六根清净。Mary尔后将终生投入到同道维权奇迹中，帮助那些和Bobby一样的少年。
