本片是由IMAX和华纳兄弟影业公司配合建造，而且获得了美国航天总署（NASA）的辅佐。IMAX 3D摄像机重返太空，记录美国太空总署（NASA）最复杂的航天飞机操纵。2009年5月11日，拍摄本片的这批IMAX 3D摄像机随亚特兰蒂斯号航天飞机一路发射升空。宇航员用它们拍摄了维修和升级哈勃千里镜所需的5次太空行走。
《哈勃3D》由制片人兼导演托妮·梅尔带领的《国际空间站》建造团队再创光辉，摄影总监詹姆斯·尼尔霍斯同时担任了全部宇航员的指导。朱蒂·卡洛尔为副制片人，建造过很多IMAX太空电影的IMAX公司开办人之一格来米·弗格森为了制片征询。
