继让?雷诺阿（1946）和路易斯?布鲁诺尔（1964）以后，伯努瓦?雅克再次挑选奥克塔夫?米尔博的小说来对资产阶级停止冷言冷语。影片以一个极力保全自己生活的年轻女报酬配角，经过其日志的视角，雅克展现了看似有力的气力和似乎有力的有力性。女仆的形象揭开了20世纪早期隐藏的黑暗要地，也暗示了现今生活的不安宁性。
