由于心脏病爆发，贾克斯（布莱恩·考克斯 Brian Cox 饰）又一次的住进了医院，躺在病床上的他大白自己光阴无多，可他经营的酒吧却后继无人。在医院里，贾克斯结识了神气委靡颓丧而又沮丧的年轻人卢卡斯（保罗·达诺 Paul Dano 饰），他来到这里的缘由是自杀得逞。卢卡斯的际遇让贾克斯很是感慨，在一股不知所以然的感动下，卢卡斯成为了贾克斯心目中的继续人选。
贾克斯收留了卢卡斯，一步步的教他若何治理一间酒吧，卢卡斯聪明勤恳，很快便能独当一面，与此同时，他和贾克斯之间也发生了坚固而又真诚的友谊。某天，一个名叫爱普尔（伊希尔·勒·贝斯柯 Isild Le Besco 饰）的美丽女子出现在了酒吧里，她乞求贾克斯和卢卡斯为她供给一个存身之地，可是，这明显违反了贾克斯“不准女人进入酒吧”的条例，但卢卡斯却不这么想，两人的关系就此堕入了僵局。
