这是一曲失利者的悲歌。西班牙内战(1936 1939)竣事后，失利的共和国政府的保护者们理所固然地被判处禁锢，连同他们的精神一道受禁锢的还有他们的声音。该片首要报告的是军事旨领佛朗哥在对否决派停止血腥弹压和报复中入狱的一群妇女的惨痛故事。作品塑造了一系列身世小同、性情各异的女性人物形象，不仪描画她们在狱中的磨难生活，更反应了地们誓与反动政府斗争到底的豪杰气慨。但是这些在狱中饱经忧患的斗士们，有的被处以死刑，有的死于病痛，侥幸出出狱的百里挑一。是以，她们提山了一个响亮的口号：要活下去，要报告历史，要人声呐喊。因而，发出了“沉睡的声音”。
