◎简 介
两名白人男人强奸了年仅10岁的黑人女孩童雅，并试图将其杀戮。幸亏童雅被人们找到，虽身负重伤却保住了人命。两名白人男人因涉嫌强奸被抓捕，但在种族轻视严重的密西西比州他们极能够会被开释。童雅的父亲卡尔不能眼睁睁地看着两名凶手清闲法外，因而潜藏在暗处，趁两人被提审时冲了出来，用抢射杀了两个咎由自取的家伙。然后，卡尔回抵家，安置好一切后与前来抓捕他的警长回到了差人局。
作为少少数愿意为黑人做辩解的律师，杰克此前曾帮助卡尔的哥哥打赢讼事。卡尔再次找到杰克，希望获得他的帮助。但卡尔一切的产业算在一路只要不到1000美圆，而为谋杀案辩解的普遍用度在5-10万元。
媒体非常关注案件的成长，杰克一会儿成为了名流，经常会出现在电视台的采访中。但与此同时，这也给杰克带来了不小的麻烦。两名被卡尔射杀的白人男人的哥哥弗雷迪为了替弟弟报仇，加入了污名昭著的三K党，并对杰克的家人以及事务所工作职员停止了恐吓。
法学院门生艾伦对这起案件非常感爱好，她屡次找到杰克希望做他的助理，都被杰克逐一回绝。杰克不想再让任何人遭到危险。但艾伦并不死心，并在第一次出庭时为杰克供给了有益的证据，杰克终究赞成吸纳艾伦成为自己的小组成员。与此同时，被告方请到了著名检察官巴克里作为辩解律师，巴克里想用此次的机遇一鸣惊人，因而不惜用各类手段制造对卡尔晦气的条件，以争取陪审团偏向于被告方。
弗雷迪不能忍受有人帮助杰克，更不能接管媒体偏向于那些“黑鬼”一方，他和三K成员烧毁了杰克的屋子并捉住了艾伦，将她绑缚在郊外的树上任其自生自灭。幸亏艾伦被人实时救出，才幸免于难。
在终极的审判上，杰克以一段大方鼓动而又感动听心的陈说赢得了陪审团的心，这些白人陪审团成员情愿将“免死牌”发给阿谁看似蛮横龌龊的黑人卡尔。这件事颤动了全部密西西比州，一切黑人都感应兴高采烈。他们终究可以和白人一样，在法令眼前大家同等，而这一切都要归功于卡尔的律师――杰克。
