上世纪30年月，一家德国巧克力厂的老板是俄国人，面临婚姻和奇迹两重触礁，万念俱灰。他空想离开自己的生活，如同灵魂出窍似的从旁观察自己。当他看到一个陌头流浪汉时，那人在他看来跟他自己长得如出一辙。为了“交换身份”，他杀死了对方。
本片跟法斯宾德其他作品有很大差别，他采用了著名编剧的剧本，而且还是改编自纳博科夫的小说。出色对白似乎集合在影片的前三分之一。影片大胆、庸俗，曾遭到普遍的恶评。
