◎简 介
桑顿是重量级拳王，因致命一击打死对手，今前收支拳坛，由美国返回故乡爱尔兰，隐居故乡下不问世事，返乡途中碰到玛丽惊为天人，被车夫麦克林讥讽是口渴所发生的幻影。玛丽黑暗帮桑顿扫除祖产，借此脸色，桑顿托麦克林作媒，玛丽的哥哥威尔却多加阻止，幸赖隆纳根神父和普雷佛牧师帮助才得以结婚。威尔喜好提兰孀妇，故让玛丽出嫁，险谋被看破后大发雷霆，只给玛丽一点点嫁妆。爱尔兰风气守旧，玛丽以为截留嫁妆是对丈夫的欺侮，经常埋怨要求取回，但桑顿无意争取名利，玛利以为丈夫是个怯夫，怕村人讽刺想逃离故乡，桑顿把她拖回外家，并与威尔大打脱手，一场恶斗威尔被打得口服心服，玛丽才知丈夫不是怯夫，尽释前嫌和洽如初……
