◎简 介
本片描写的是罗马帝国慢慢走向衰亡的进程。罗马天子卡斯奥里路（安东尼·奎尔饰），晚年时决议将王位传给贤臣利比亚斯（斯蒂芬·博伊德饰），而不是传给王子康莫德斯（亚力克·吉尼斯饰），因此被毒死。利比亚斯并没有作罗马的天子，而是辅佐自己的好友康莫德斯登上皇位，但却引来天子的忌恨，因而派他去守边陲。新天子登基，治国无术，残暴不仁，由于增税题目引发各联邦群的抵挡，而带头的正是姐姐露西拉公主。新天子派遣利比亚斯去征讨，利比亚斯面临着爱人，却照旧挑选了忠君。可是天子却捉住了他与公主，预备烧死他们。利比亚斯最初终究杀死了这个昏君，带着公主阔别皇室而去。自此，罗马帝国逐步走向衰亡。
