◎简 介
本片描写的是悠远的公元1066年，法王威廉一世打败萨克逊人，统治英国，操纵强势的铁骑及僧侣压制贫苦的萨克逊农民。经过一百多年传位于他的孙子——亨利二世（彼得．奥图尔饰），但亨利二世有个好友名叫汤姆斯（理查德．伯顿饰）是个萨克逊人。汤姆斯在亨利二世接位后，被封作辅弼，并凭着其聪明才干超出英伦海峡，不费一兵一卒便让法王割让三地，获得亨利二世的相信与重用。亨利二世历来与教会分歧，此时，正逢教主归天，为求国家安宁，亨利二世决然派汤姆斯前往接任教主职位。汤姆斯接收神职后，反而要比做辅弼更领会官方的疾苦，获得公众的爱戴，并寻回萨克逊人的自我，引得亨利二世的猜疑，借受贿之名加以谗谄。汤姆斯只得漂泊它乡，苦行修身，多年后返国仍然遭到国人的爱戴，引发骑士的发急予以杀戮。
