1970年，来自美国长岛中产阶级家庭的青年希斯（Brad Davis饰）与女友来到土耳其度假，临行前希斯偷携了两千克大麻，不意登机时表露，并因藏匿毒品被捕。希斯在被押往牢狱的路上逃走失利后又遭牢狱官毒打，所幸他很快结识了两位狱友：吉米（Randy Quaid 饰）与艾力（Norbert Weisser 饰），并起头逐步熟悉土耳其牢狱中如露天市场般紊乱荒诞的生活情况。
虽经父亲多方尽力，但希斯仍不能不忍受四年刑期。四年后行将出狱时却正逢美土交恶，希斯不巧被改判三十年，成为了交际的牺牲品。艾力这时又刑满开释，希斯的承受力面临解体，终极决议加入到吉米的逃狱计划中去……
